Brent Devost, B.Ed - Board Chair

Brent has been coaching, teaching and mentoring students both in and out of the classroom for over 25 years, and developing young leaders has been both his lifelong passion and commitment. Through his vision and a keen understanding of how to build, lead and foster teams, he has carved out creative and successful paths for thousands of students. In 1999 Brent founded the Edge School, a Calgary based independent school offering a comprehensive education focused on three key pillars: Academics, Athletics and Leadership Development. Through Brent’s vision and leadership, the Edge School created a unique and first-of-its-kind environment for student-athletes in Calgary. Under Brent’s direction and drive as President and Chief Executive Officer, Edge School grew from seven students in 1999 to 320 students over a decade later and in 2009 moved into the newly constructed 170,000 sq ft Edge School and Jim Davidson Sports Complex on the West side of the City. Out of the classroom, Brent has extensive coaching experience and was the co-founder and inaugural Chairman of the Canadian Sport School Hockey League, and the first High School Hockey Chair as a member of the Hockey Calgary Board. Brent also has board experience, having sat on the Board for the Edge School, Hockey Calgary as the Chair of High School Hockey, and for the Between Friends Club of Calgary. In 2006 Brent was named one of the city’s “Top 40 Under 40” by Calgary Inc., in recognition of his vision, boundless energy, contagious work ethic and contributions to the community at large in successfully forging a new educational model on the Calgary landscape. Holding his B.Ed. in Elementary Education and Teaching from the University of Calgary, Brent admires the excellent work Big Plans has done over the years and continues to do every day. Having been a part of building many educational organizations, he sees a tremendous opportunity to strengthen the organization as a whole, through enhanced governance, organization and administrative structure, and leadership.

 

B. M. (Berni) Brunsch, B.Admin, ICD.D - Director

Holding a degree with distinction in Administration from Athabasca University, Berni is a member of the Institute of Directors and has his ICD.D designation. His extensive work experience includes a position in management with a government agency; a senior advisor with several international oil and gas producers, and a senior executive with a consulting firm and a software company. Berni has been a board member of both non-profit organizations and private corporations since 2003, acting in various capacities and committees including, audit and governance committees. He recognizes the valuable work Big PLANS does in the community and looks forward to assisting the Board to ensure the organization is equipped to move forward in the future and will continue to provide the quality care that Big PLANS clients deserve.

 

Denise Weaver, B.A., B.Ed - Director

Denise has been in the field of education for over 20 years. She has served in various leadership positions including as an assistant principal at Muriel Clayton Middle School in Airdrie, Alberta, since 2012 and is currently at Meadowbrook Middle School.  Denise received her Bachelor of Education (English) and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Lethbridge in 1996. She is currently completing her Masters in a Specialization in Leadership focusing on Leading in Learning. Her prior teaching experience includes teaching Grade three half-time while also acting as the Primary Years Programme Coordinator half-time from 2010-2012, Primary years generalist from 2004-2012, and as an elementary teacher for a multi-grade 4/5 class between 2000 and 2001. Denise also taught in a multi-grade 4/5/6 class in a two-room schoolhouse located in Gem, Alberta, from 1996 until 1999. Nominated for the Edwin Parr Award of Excellence in her first year of teaching, Denise is a strong strategic thinker and planner and is passionate about learning support as it relates to fostering students with complex learning needs. As a professional educator, Denise brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in creating units of study that use universal concepts to anchor curriculum objectives. Denise possesses a diverse and evolving understanding of leadership, curriculum and pedagogy. Denise is reflective, hard-working, compassionate and has demonstrated a commitment to the profession. She is excited to serve now with Big Plans for Little Kids.

 

Gary Freitas, CPA, CGA, CFE - Director

As a dedicated accounting professional, Gary worked in public practice for five years before moving to industry where he has held many high-level management roles including Chief Financial Officer and Vice President Finance. Gary has also worked with a variety of organizations and sat on many boards in positions such as treasurer and outside advisor. Holding his Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) and his CFE (Certified Fraud Examiner) designations, Gary brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Big PLANS Board. With a strong belief in giving back to the community and helping organizations grow, Gary looks forward to sharing his expertise and guidance with the team.

 

Michael Souster, M.Sc., B.Kin (Hon) - Director

After completing an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology at the University of Calgary, Michael obtained his Masters of Science degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of Alberta. Michael has 25 years of business experience directing companies in both the non-profit and for-profit sectors and is an instructor at a local university. He has served as a Director with three non-profit organizations and four private corporations. As one of the founding Directors and Officers of Big PLANS for Little Kids, Michael has seen the organization grow from its inception to the valuable resource it has become today. With a strong belief in the early intervention services that Big PLANS provides to families, Michael hopes his experience and knowledge of the company will be an asset to the Board in ensuring the continued success of the organization.
